Repetition of age-old story (09-07-08)

India is always credited to have a fast reading of any situation and to apply the reinforcements at the earliest. The same was seen when the Indian government, with no further delay, sent a high-level team headed by the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. Nail Surie, towards Kabul to have a thorough appraisal of the entire situation following the deadliest suicide attack at the Indian Embassy. The baneful onslaught claimed lives of 44 people.

Apart from all others, after many years a high official, in the rank of an IFS officer, his defence attaché, two responsible personnel of the ITBP security contingent were killed due to the attack. This is indeed the most daring attack on Indians, in the recent days, in the war-ridden lanes of Afghanistan who were posted there to rebuild the ravaged country in a better manner.

The incident is indeed highly significant and has, therefore, sent a shudder both in the foreign office and the government in the national capital at Delhi. The intensity of the incident made the Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee convene a high-level meeting with Defence Minister, Mr. AK Antony, and senior officials. The high level team is set to return by tomorrow with the bodies of the Indian mission staff killed in the attack.

But this is nothing new. At each time a similar incident happens the Government of India appears to be courteous and restive. Be it Kargil, Indo-Bangladesh border and this time in Kabul, the same picture is repeated when the hapless government except offering deepest condolences to the bereaved families has nothing to do more.

On the contrary, recognition should be given to those unsung heroes like the70 ITBP officers who are deployed in Kabul and are working amidst apprehensions of being targeted, since India is always a potential target of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.
